Madonna della Madia Summer Celebration 2026 — Monopoli’s Miraculous Sea Procession

On August 14 and 15, 2026, the Adriatic port city of Monopoli honours its beloved protector with the summer edition of the Festa della Madonna della Madia — a deeply moving celebration that re-enacts one of the most cherished miracles in Pugliese Catholic tradition. The Legend of the Madia

The story dates back to December 16, 1117, when — according to tradition — a wooden raft (a madia) carrying an icon of the Virgin Mary miraculously arrived in Monopoli’s port. At the time, the city’s cathedral was under construction and lacking a roof. The bishop, Romualdo, had prayed for a sign, and the raft’s arrival was taken as the answer. The icon was enshrined in the cathedral, which was renamed the Basilica Concattedrale della Madonna della Madia, and the Madonna della Madia has been Monopoli’s patroness ever since.

The Summer Celebration: August 14–15

While the main feast falls on December 16 (the anniversary of the miracle), the summer celebration on August 14–15 draws far larger crowds. The warm weather transforms the religious observance into a city-wide festival, with tens of thousands of visitors filling the lungomare and the narrow alleys of the centro storico.

On the evening of August 14, a re-enactment of the miraculous arrival takes place: a decorated raft carrying a replica of the sacred icon is launched from the port and guided to shore by fishing boats decked with flags and flowers. The bishop and clergy receive the icon at the harbour as the city band plays and the faithful sing traditional hymns. This is one of the most visually striking religious ceremonies on the entire Adriatic coast.

On August 15 (Ferragosto, Italy’s national summer holiday), the day begins with a pontifical mass in the cathedral. In the evening, the icon of the Madonna della Madia is carried in a solemn procession through the centro storico, passing the Castello di Carlo V, the Baroque churches, and the whitewashed vicoli draped with luminarie lights. The procession concludes with a spectacular fireworks display over the port, reflecting off the Adriatic in colours that can be seen across the bay.

The Street Festa: Food, Music, and Ferragosto Spirit

The civil programme runs alongside the religious events. Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II and the lungomare host food stalls serving Monopoli’s seafood specialities — cozze gratinate (baked mussels), frittura di paranza (mixed fried fish), and riso, patate e cozze (rice, potatoes, and mussels, a Barese classic). Local bands play pizzica and Italian pop, and the atmosphere continues late into the night across the bars and gelaterie of the old town.
